An InterActive General Chemistry Textbook
Chem21Labs has created a condensed interactive textbook that tracks the OpenStax™ Chemistry2e textbook. If students need additional information or explanation, they can visit the OpenStax™ site.
The Chem21Labs' Chemistry InterActive textbook is used in distance learning classes and contains the following activities and assignments:
- Embedded activities - interactive graphs and animations that "give life" to the presented content. On some webpages, words on the page are highlighted at a specific place in the animation to create a strong visual connection.
- Timed-Repetitive Quizzes - assignable flash cards that build and maintain a student's chemical database.
- Tutorials - interactive assignments that build primary connections between the facts stored in the database.
- Homework - assignments that use multi-step processes and higher order thinking skills. Homework problems build secondary connections.
- Labs - assignments that add sensory connections.
- Virtual labs - students perform labs that contain expensive or hazardous chemicals and specialized equipment. The virtual lab hovers over the lab report webpage . . . . data collected inside the virtual lab is entered on the webpage. Calculations based on the collected data are auto-graded . . . . students have 3 tries to enter the correct answer - feedback is given after each try.
- Hybrid labs - assignments that contain a hands-on lab and a virtual lab. The hands-on lab uses generally regarded as safe (GRAS) household chemicals. Both the virtual part and the hands-on part are autograded as described above for virtual labs.
- Chemistry jokes are sprinkled throughout the book to add a smile while learning. Here are a couple of favorites:
. . . . they make up everything
